Chapter Five

The sound of the sea pervaded Rosa’s dreams. Sleepily, she stretched and gradually opened her eyes. Fleeting panic seized her, then as the memories of leaving the hotel for Hunter’s Moon tumbled into place, she smiled contentedly, watching the sun cast dancing leaf patterns against the wall.

A light tap on the door brought Rosa back to the present. Running her fingers through her tousled hair, she tugged the duvet up to her chin.

‘Come in.’

Kit made his way into the room balancing two mugs of coffee.

‘Sleep well?’

‘Very, thank you.’ She felt ridiculously shy.

Kit sank on to the bed beside her and sighed.

‘I intend to make the most of today.

Daisy Chain will take up all of my time from tomorrow, so I thought that today I’d show you the sights.’

‘I want to see everywhere! Oh, and Angie said I had to eat at Mantonis just once.’ Rosa smiled, mentioning Jersey’s world-famous restaurant.

‘I’ll ring and book a table for this evening. I haven’t eaten there for some time.’

Sipping at his coffee, Kit grinned as he stood up.

‘I’ll be downstairs when you’re ready. I like to swim before breakfast and you’d be more than welcome. Have you brought a swimsuit with you? If not I’m sure there’s a spare one of Claudia’s kicking around.’

‘I’ve got my own, thank you,’ Rosa answered stiffly.

‘I’ll see you downstairs.’

Pulling on her rather skimpy bikini and covering it decorously with shorts and vest, Rosa ran downstairs.

‘Good morning, love.’

A plump, middle-aged woman with a halo of curls paused in the middle of polishing and beamed at her. ‘Kit said to tell you he’s waiting outside. Rosa Brennan! I’ve seen you on TV. I told Kit, me and my husband, we’ve won quite a lot of money on you. Oh, I’m Pam Belmont, Kit’s neighbour and housekeeper, by the way.’ Rosa shook her hand and headed outside as directed.

Kit was waiting on the edge of the lawn and held out his hand to her.

‘I’ve just met Pam Belmont,’ Rosa panted as they negotiated the steep rocky descent from the gardens to the cove. ‘She’s lovely, isn’t she?’

‘She’s a lifesaver.’ Kit moved with amazing agility over the jagged rocks. ‘She keeps Hunter’s Moon immaculate.’

The loose shale beneath her feet gave way and Rosa hurtled downwards accompanied by rattling stones. Kit caught her deftly, swung her round, and deposited her lightly on the sand.

‘Why aren’t we using the pool?’

‘The pool is fine for lazy swimming, but Jersey sea is for waking up, as you’ll find out.’

The sky was cloudless, the sun already climbing through the heat haze to scorch the white sand of the small bay. It basked in seclusion, overlooked only by Hunter’s Moon and sheltered from the larger cove by fern-covered rocks.

‘Do you own this as well?’ Rosa queried, peeling off her vest.

‘No, it’s actually part of Quaisne Bay, but the rock formation and the tides keep it cut off, so I adopted it.’

Rosa looked up quickly as Kit stopped speaking and was aware of the expression on his face as he took in her beautifully proportioned slenderness in the bikini.
